We fell in love with the redwoods, The Glen, and most importantly, the incredible poetry, the creative interpretation and adaptation of the script, the humorous improv of the cast. We were hooked. Sitting in The Glen on a summer afternoon with a picnic and wine became a sublime experience we hungered for and thrust ourselves deeply into this spirited celebration as dedicated groundlings. We returned summer after summer, and became more and more a huge fan of this company. We brought our children, and many friends, and shared this inspirational genius with them, and they were hooked as well. In fact, our son Steve, enraptured by the lyrical, epic writing of the Bard, launched a career in directing based on the magic he had felt in The Glen, returning to Santa Cruz Shakespeare first as an assistant director, then to lead the digital side of the Shakespeare Play On campaign to save and relaunch the festival, and then as a professional director on The Beard of Avon. We continue to celebrate this glorious festival, joining friends and family to see each show that is mounted, and relish in the colorful pageantry, spellbound in the ageless stories told on stage. We look forward to opening night at The Grove, and are proud of how this brave company has transformed itself to be forward-funded, transparent, and committed to bringing great art to Santa Cruz. The commitment of the leadership team to keep theater affordable and accessible is an amazing feat, and we feel blessed we can be a part of this community. We are spellbound in the ageless stories told on stage.
